St. Thomas More Society: a pro-life movement founded in 2004 by Mr. David Little. Our immediate goal is to end taxpayer funded abortion through prayer, work, and acts of conscience. We pray for life; we will not pay for death!
Special Lenten message from Mr. Little
Week 2 - Friday, March 6, 2009

Dear fellow Catholic,

"Give yourself fully to God. He will use you to accomplish great things on the condition that you believe much more in His love than in your own weakness. A sacrifice to be real must cost, must hurt, must empty ourselves. The fruit of silence is prayer, the fruit of prayer is faith, the fruit of faith is love, the fruit of love is service, the fruit of service is peace." Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta

Last week in the first Lenten Message, I said I would write this week about Satan and how we fall victim to his temptations and traps or snares and Catholic teachings to overcome him. I will do that at a later date.

For now I must return to a theme of the first letter that deserves more attention now, and that is almsgiving. You will see a major change in our site this week. I have asked our wonderful webmaster to change the buttons that invite souls to help financially from the term "Donate" to "Give Alms".

Every site I have ever seen, Catholic or not, that requests financial help uses the term 'Donate'. Almsgiving is much more true in our case than donations. For almsgiving is of our Catholic Lenten and Advent Tradition in a most important way, in fact almsgiving is simply a gift to us from God. This letter will strive to offer insight so you will see how great will be your reward, spiritually and temporally even in the here and now, if you give alms from your heart.

Though I was plainly unworthy, Blessed Mother Teresa became a dear, dear friend to me and my modest and poor work for the Church. She always depended on Divine Providence to provide the temporal means to help the poorest of the poor. She wrote a letter for me to a very wealthy man the very first day I met her April 9,1984 in Rome. That letter is reproduced here with the man's name obscured.

The gift came from our good God through Mother Teresa and the kind almsgiver.

The World St. Thomas More Society has an alms gathering goal to provide the financial resources for a truly international campaign to proclaim, promote, protect innocent human life, true marriage, the family and chastity and purity throughout the entire world. (See the Perpetual Novena)

The first priority is innocent human life. We ask you to truly sacrifice for the sake of mercy. We must wake up. We are asleep. Our little brothers and sisters have been exterminated in the hundreds of millions in the last 40 years. And the genocidal holocaust goes on and on. While we are asleep.

The letter above resulted in a major gift of alms for the unborn children of Canada and the United States. The man who gave the alms was moved to assist us through the intercession of Mother. Perhaps thousands of unborn children were saved as a result of that alms gift. But hundreds of millions continued to die and die even more so today. It is an unspeakable abomination, and if we do not get very serious, Jesus may no longer be enabled to restrain the just retribution of the Father who hears the blood of the innocents crying out for justice! God's mercy is rightly expected to be our mercy.

You and your sacrificial gift of alms will be the first to create an international media fund of many millions of dollars, indeed it will take many hundreds of millions of dollars to begin to do justice to the unborn given the world wide culture of death that spends billions of dollars promoting death of our most vulnerable brothers and sisters in the womb. Jesus said, "Would that the children of light were as industrious as the children of darkness." Luke 16:8 (Vulgate- translation)  Eph.5:8 "For once you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord; walk as children of light." Let us join together, become saints, in our station of life, where we are and who we are right now, and do something beautiful for God, as Blessed Mother Teresa invited me to do many years ago.

This is my call to you, a call certain in my soul from the Holy Spirit to invite you to join in this GLOBAL mission to change the world. Click and give alms today! Give from your very substance! What does that mean? Mother taught me that when you give, there is little grace when you give from your surplus, but much grace indeed when you give from your substance. Common spiritual sense. We must truly believe Christ when he said in Luke.6:38 "Give, and it will be given to you; good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For the measure you give will be the measure you get back." How wonderful is our God! No matter how much you give, the reward you receive will be greater!

I make dear Mother Teresa's words my own: Give yourself fully to God. He will use you to accomplish great things on the condition that you believe much more in His love than in your own weakness.

To repeat what was written in the first Lenten Letter, as it is essential to grasp: if you don't risk anything for God, you will never do anything great for God.

And again: St. Teresa of Avila said, "You pay God a compliment by asking great things of Him."  Ask Him for mercy on you and your loved ones, that you can have true mercy in service to the real poorest of the poor - the unborn.

Ask God for the grace to trust Him - fully. Believe and Trust! Give alms until it hurts. You will not be sorry, I promise you that!  At the risk of injuring humility I must share a private journey.

My family has been receiving alms for more than four years. Fighting against tax-funded abortion since 2000, I have not filed my tax return since 1999. It will be fully 10 years this coming April. I had to force the government of Canada to bring charges against me; I have been fighting this issue with the government since 1982 by many means. But that is for another letter.

When I forced the government to act, I did so by writing a letter (See here) to the Prime Minister of Canada, a false Catholic, three and a half years after I had stopped filing! The government is afraid of making a martyr. Fully five years after I stopped filing the government finally charged me with a criminal offense of not filing my returns. That came only after I wrote another letter to the next Prime Minister, another false Catholic, which you may read here.

When the charges finally were laid I was deeply relieved. Before the initial court hearing, I held a national press conference in January of 2005, and made a formal statement, which can be read here

Shortly after the press conference, a doctor, a man of good Catholic reputation walked into my office and offered $5000 for my legal defense. Much more than that, when he realized that my fight would likely result in our impoverishment, he told me that if I should lose in court, he would take care of all my family's financial needs for as long as I am in jail, even though he knew that if it came to that, I might be in jail for a very long time, until the law changed prohibiting tax funded abortion.

There were many spiritual signs earlier that God was approving what I was doing. This was another compelling sign that God was fully approving of my mission as my savings were exhausted by then.

This sign was most important however as I am married with four young children now and my vocation is to marriage and family, a husband and father and all the duties before God and the Sacrament of Matrimony obligates. Not the least of which is making certain that my family's temporal needs are provided. My wife has never worked believing that her role is wife and mother, so this sign was very important.

Also at the time of the press conference, we were pregnant with our fourth child, who was born six weeks later, April 17, 2005. It was my third son whose full name bears a listing here: David, then Daniel, (after his Godfather) Karol (after John Paul II) Maximilian, (after St. Maximilian Kolbe, a favorite martyr) then Bartholomew (after my Guardian Angel, who about five years ago told me his name after five years of asking...) and finally, Seth (the third son of Adam and Eve). So there is a handle for you! David Daniel Karol Maximilian Bartholomew Seth! Almost 7 pounds! Gratefully we call him, simply: Seth. I chose Daniel, Karol, and Bartholomew; my wife Madonna chose the others! This was a great gift and a concrete sign of new life to encourage us to fight the death culture.

Another great sign came even earlier. Believing in my stand against tax-funded abortion in Canada, a great man in Florida gave alms that amounted to enough to support our family for ten months! Alms gifts from donors still provide the most basic support for our family, my wife and our four young children. I also have three grown children and a stepdaughter. What a blessing to have 8 children, flowers from the Lord, a large family to love and to be loved in return.

We are given alms from very holy persons, especially another man at present, a fine and noble virtuous and prayerful man who plans to enter the seminary soon to be a priest, providing all our most basic needs for more than a year. This man has also become one of the dearest friends I have ever known. Pray for him please, his middle name is Thomas, after St. Thomas More, I am certain!

Please take into your heart what I am about to say now. Though we are poor, have no extra money whatever, we too give alms, (against humility I speak, may I be forgiven) and to encourage your understanding, I will tell you why. We give ten percent of every alms gift to families in our local parish family who suffer greater needs to survive than we do. What is the result? Not once in that time have we ever been unprovided in our basic needs. Not once. Though we have lost our beautiful home, furniture, outdoor swimming pool and a major income because of this legal case I am fighting, we have never been happier.

I will never file again or pay any fine until Canadian law prohibits coercive laws forcing all income tax payers to be complicit in paying for abortion murder. If you wish to see my authority for doing this read my letter to the Minister of National Revenue here.

The devil attacked us ferociously immediately after that letter was mailed, but with serious prayer and fasting and help from my Bishop, that was resolved happily. You need not fear the devil's onslaughts however; he cannot hurt you unless it is through sin.

I would not be candid or forthright if I did not caution to prepare yourself if you are truly serious about becoming a Saint, a passionate world changer! See Denver Archbishop Chaput's interview here. It is only Saints who change the world for the GOOD. Read the brief 2nd Chapter of Sirach; in the first verse an older (I believe most accurate) translation reads, "My son if you come forward to serve the Lord, prepare to do battle with the devil." What else did the Master do when He went into the desert to prepare His mission? We must imitate Him! DISMISS Satan and his minions with the words of Christ in Scripture, in Matt.4:10, "Begone, Satan! for it is written, `You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.''

He will flee forthwith, if you are in the state of grace. Other scriptures are helpful. Do your homework in Scripture, the Catechism of the Catholic Church and holy reading. And read the Lives of the Saints for lots of wonderful tips of how to rebuke the evil one. It takes hard work to become a Saint, a Champion, valiant Knight or Lady of His Divine Majesty! Start by holy reading.

I always recommend a life of St. Padre Pio, St. John Vianney, St. Gerard Majella, (especially "To Heaven Through a Window") St. Maria Faustina's Diary on the Divine Mercy, "Introduction to the Devout Life" by St. Francis DeSales and the "Imitation of Christ" It is not easy to become a Saint, but what great glory awaits those who do! Remember this, the devil tries to make us afraid; the only thing to fear is SIN! NOTHING ELSE. Go to confession often. John Paul II went every week to an old friend, a Polish priest. Daily Mass is the greatest prayer of all. And Holy Hours before the Blessed Sacrament are pure bliss if you commit to perseverance. Sometimes I find it so hard to leave even after several hours because the love of God is bursting from within me. Start where you are. God is most merciful. He will not disappoint. But go to Him with a clean heart. He loves you more, much more than you love yourself or anyone loves you! God is pure love. He will give it to you, and everything you need in your life to have heaven...even starting here on earth, if you will only ask with the persistency of Luke 11. And pray, fast and give alms. Hear the words of a great, and I mean GREAT expert.

"Fasting is the soul of prayer, mercy (almsgiving) is the lifeblood of fasting. Let no one try to separate them; they cannot be separated. If you have only one of them or not all together, you have nothing. So if you pray, fast; if you fast, show mercy, (give alms); if you want your petition to be heard, hear the petition of others. If you do not close your ear to others you open God's ear to yourself." -  St. Peter Chrysologus

But just what is alms or almsgiving? Most us have understood alms as gifts to the poor unable to help themselves. Very true. But the focus or priority of almsgiving is essential to understand. For example, if there were two children sitting before you just now, one starving, the other with a knife to its throat and you had certain power to save both, to whom would you be merciful first? Of course the child imminently threatened with execution and then the starving child is the clear and common sense answer and the correct priority. Almsgiving is Mercy!

According to the World Health Organization and other reputable sources 15,000,000 children die of starvation annuallyhttp://library.thinkquest.org/C002291/high/present/stats.htm

According to the most accurate scientific, medical and mathematical calculations, there are more than 4 times as many abortions by the birth control pill, the IUD, and "morning after" chemicals every year in the USA alone. This means that we add 7,950,000 abortifacient deaths to the 1,400,000 deaths by surgical abortion deaths. A mind boggling 9,350,000 abortion deaths annually in the USA alone. And this data is dated. No one really knows how many babies are killed by these chemicals today with, in many cases, over the counter availability. More than 4 times the number of abortions by surgery.

Bogomir M. Kuhar, Doctor of Pharmacy, is the president of Pharmacists for Life. In his booklet Infant Homicides Through Contraceptives (page 26), he cites studies suggesting oral contraceptives have a breakthrough ovulation rate of 2 to 10%. Fertility specialist Dr. Thomas Hilgers estimates the rate at 4 to 10%, adding that minipills allow ovulation 50-60% of the time ("The New Abortionists," Life Advocate, March 1994, page 29)Dr. Nine van der Vange, at the Society for the Advancement of Contraception's November 26-30, 1984 conference in Jakarta, stated that her studies indicated an ovulation rate of 4.7% for women taking the Pill.

How do these percentages translate into real numbers? The Ortho Corporation's 1991 annual report estimated 13.9 million U.S. women using oral contraceptives. Multiplying this by the low 2% ovulation figure, and factoring in studies showing a 25% overall conception rate for normally fertile couples of average sexual activity, Dr. Kuhar arrives at a figure of 834,000 birth-control-pill-induced abortions per year. Multiplying by the high 10%, the figure is 4,170,000 per year. The low figure is over 50% the number of surgical abortions (1.5 million), the high is 250% that number. (Using other studies, also based on total estimated number of ovulations and U.S. users, Dr. Kuhar attributes 3,825,000 annual abortions to IUDs; 1,200,000 to Depo-Provera; 2,925,000 to Norplant.) See full report here.

If we use the World Health figures of 50 million surgical abortions in the world annually and reduce the US rate of abortifacient deaths by 25%, then we have a very conservative estimate of a factor of 3, resulting in 3 x 50 or 150,000,000 annual abortions in the world, TEN times the number of children who annually starve to death. Of course we must help the starving. But  how can the world truly care about the starving, if they don't care about murdering them before they even see food outside the womb?

Whatever the full number of murders by abortion, the moral implications is clear. Children die of starvation by negligent hearts and minds. Doubtless they don't know it, but the evil one inspires people to think and then say: "Well, the problem is there are too many starving children, so the answer is, feed them, of course, but first, don't give their governments relief food or money until they have good reproductive health programs."; (Read contraception and abortion.)

How does this affect you and I spiritually? Remember that almsgiving is MERCY. And there are priorities.

"When the obligation of almsgiving urges, it is necessary to distinguish extreme necessity from common necessity. It is extreme when a neighbor is in peril of his life. In a neighbor's grave need, we are bound to come to his aid out of the goods superfluous to our state; but in extreme (need) also from out of goods from our very substance."  St. Alphonsus Liquori - Homo Apostolicus: Punctum II. De eleemosyna.

"There is no more profitable practice as a companion to holy and spiritual fasting than that of almsgiving. This embraces under the single name of mercy many excellent works of devotion, so that the good intentions of all the faithful may be of equal value, even where their means are not. The love that we owe both God and man is always free from any obstacle that would prevent us from having a good intention. The angels sang: Glory to God in the highest, and peace to His people on earth. The person who shows love and compassion to those in any kind of affliction (ed.note: there is no affliction greater than being murdered in the womb.) is blessed, not only with the virtue of good will but also with the gift of peace. In the matter of almsgiving not only the rich and affluent but also those of average means and the poor are able to play their part. Those who are unequal in their capacity to give can be equal in the love within their hearts... Because in prayer faith remains steadfast, in fasting life remains innocent, in almsgiving the mind remains kind. By prayer we seek to propitiate God, by fasting we extinguish the lusts of the flesh, by alms we redeem our sins." - Pope St. Leo the Great

This universal Pope and Doctor of the Church gives us the same remedy he possessed to help us meet the challenges of the power of evil, its temptations and its many enemies that confront us. He informs us that those who will clash with visible or invisible forces must arm himself with persistence and perseverance in prayer, fasting and almsgiving.

Through our weakness we sin but we will be forgiven for our sins when we exercise these three Chief Apostolic Works of the Church. Giving alms from our substance covers a multitude of sins; fasting is the special mortification that the devil is defenseless against; serious prayer will unite us to God in love and empower us to keep our wills united with the will of God, which is everything.

Giving from one's substance is the highest form of almsgiving. Let us see what Sacred Scripture says.

Mark 12:[41] And He sat down opposite the treasury, and watched the multitude putting money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums.

[42] And a poor widow came, and put in two copper coins, which make a penny.

[43] And He called his disciples to him, and said to them, "Truly, I say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the treasury.

[44] For they all contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, her whole living."

(Ed. note: The widow is blessed for all eternity because she gave to God from her substance.)

Tob.4 [7] Give alms from your possessions to all who live uprightly, and do not let your eye begrudge the gift when you make it. Do not turn your face away from any poor man, and the face of God will not be turned away from you.

Tob.12 [8] Prayer is good when accompanied by fasting, almsgiving, and righteousness. A little with righteousness is better than much with wrongdoing. It is better to give alms than to treasure up gold. [9] For almsgiving delivers from death, and it will purge away every sin. Those who perform deeds of charity and of righteousness will have fullness of life.

Tob.14 [2] He was fifty-eight years old when he lost his sight, and after eight years he regained it. He gave alms, and he continued to fear the Lord God and to praise him.

[10] Bury me properly, and your mother with me. And do not live in Nineveh any longer. See, my son, what Nadab did to Ahikar who had reared him, how he brought him from light into darkness, and with what he repaid him. But Ahikar was saved, and the other received repayment as he himself went down into the darkness. Ahikar gave alms and escaped the deathtrap which Nadab had set for him; but Nadab fell into the trap and perished.

[11] So now, my children, consider what almsgiving accomplishes and how righteousness delivers." As he said this he died in his bed. He was a hundred and fifty-eight years old; and Tobias gave him a magnificent funeral.

Sir.3 [30] Water extinguishes a blazing fire:

      so almsgiving atones for sin.

Sir.7 [10] Do not be fainthearted in your prayer,

      nor neglect to give alms.

Sir.12 [3] No good will come to the man who persists in evil

or to him who does not give alms.

Sir.17 [22] A man's almsgiving is like a signet with the Lord

and he will keep a person's kindness like

      the apple of his eye.

Sir.29 [12] Store up almsgiving in your treasury,

      and it will rescue you from all affliction;

Sir.40 [17] Kindness is like a garden of blessings,

and almsgiving endures for ever.[24] Brothers and help are for a time of trouble, but almsgiving rescues better than both.

Luke 11

[37] While he was speaking, a Pharisee asked him to dine with him; so he went in and sat at table.

[38] The Pharisee was astonished to see that he did not first wash before dinner.

[39] And the Lord said to him, "Now you Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside you are full of extortion and wickedness.

[40] You fools! Did not he who made the outside make the inside also?

[41] But give for alms those things which are within; and behold, everything is clean for you.

Luke.12

[33] Sell your possessions, and give alms; provide yourselves with purses that do not grow old, with a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches and no moth destroys.

Acts.10

[1] At Caesarea there was a man named Cornelius, a centurion of what was known as the Italian Cohort,

[2] a devout man who feared God with all his household, gave alms liberally to the people, and prayed constantly to God.

[3] About the ninth hour of the day he saw clearly in a vision an angel of God coming in and saying to him, "Cornelius."

[4] And he stared at him in terror, and said, "What is it, Lord?" And he said to him, "Your prayers and your alms have ascended as a memorial before God.

And what does the Church of today of the needs before us?

"The extermination of millions of unborn children, in the name of the fight against poverty, actually constitutes the destruction of the poorest of all human beings." - Pope Benedict XVI, January 1, 2009, on Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God

Poorest of all human beings? They are indeed.

How do we respond?

Let us allow dear Mother to answer as she has at the beginning of this letter. Pray to her for this grace - to grasp this. And to act in service.

"A sacrifice to be real must cost, must hurt, must empty ourselves. The fruit of silence is prayer, the fruit of prayer is faith, the fruit of faith is love, the fruit of love is service, the fruit of service is peace."

And the great Saint earlier quoted:

"Do not lose by saving, but gather in by giving. Give to the poor, and you give to yourself. You will not be allowed to keep what you have refused to give to others. If you hope for mercy, show mercy. If you look for kindness, show kindness. If you want to receive, give. If you ask for yourself what you deny to others, your asking is a mockery. Let this be the pattern for all souls when they practice mercy: show mercy to others in the same way, with the same generosity, with the same promptness, as you want others to show mercy to you." - Saint Peter Chrysologus, (Golden Words) Doctor of the Church, Bishop of Revenna, Italy. 406-450

It remains true that I am in danger of going to jail for the rest of my life, if the evil one has his way; even if God permits this of me, I can tell you truthfully, I am doing nothing I would not want others to do if I was in the womb and in peril of being murdered before I saw the beauty of the Sun, my mother, perhaps a father, brothers and sisters and a family. Do for others what you would have them do for you.

So pray, fast and give alms from your very substance. Give to The St. Thomas More Society to Him for the least of his little ones. We are fully accountable for every penny to you and God.

Since our goal is to effect change through spiritual means, media campaigns, and particularly political and judicial means, your gift to us is not tax deductible. I ask that you give because you believe in Christ and His teachings in this letter. The good things taxes provide can never justify killing innocent babies. Let not our consciences be bribed, silenced or somnolent by government benefits, which shroud plain murder.

We badly need your help to do what must be done to save these holy innocents. Click on the Give Alms button and help us help them please. Let us at least do our share! And join me and persevere to become Real Saints together. Let us pray, fast and give alms for one another - together!

Join us. Pray seriously. Fast seriously. Give alms seriously. Send us an email or you can call me directly from the contact menu anytime. If necessary, leave a message and rest assured I will get back to you,

In Jesus and Mary,

David
