"Some men see things as they are and say why? I dream things that never were and say, why not?"

OUR GOD is a big God, imparting His great dreams of truth to His children. Grounded in Christian teaching, and united is serious prayer, fasting and almsgiving, the St.Thomas More Society is founded to the following ends:

I. LIFE, NOT ABORTION

Principle: ALL HUMAN LIFE is CREATED by GOD and infused with the most holy sanctity of HIS image and likeness from the first moment of conception, This Divine infusion confers an inestimable dignity on the human being, in both body and soul, and demands inviolable and absolute respect. Innocent human life may NEVER willfully be taken for ANY reason. (see definition 1.)

Therefore:

(a.) We shall strive through religious, political and mass media communication, to re-establish in law and in culture, absolute respect for all human life from conception till natural death.

(b.) To end all public funded abortion in hospitals and 'clinics' beginning in Canada and the United States and then throughout the world.

(c.) To achieve legal personhood for all preborn children beginning in Canada, the United States and every country in the world.

(d.) To teach the truth that there are no "hard" cases justifying direct induced abortion. Where a child is conceived through rape or incest, one does not murder the child for the crime of the father. A mother's right to medical treatment exists whether she is pregnant or not. If as an indirect result of treatment, for example, of uterine cancer, the child should die, that has nothing to do with a direct induced abortion of an unborn child.

II. LIFE, NOT EUTHANASIA

Euthanasia, whatever its forms or motives, is the willful murder (homicide) by act or omission of a dependent human being for his or her alleged benefit. (see definition 2.)

Therefore:

We shall strive to build a culture of life for all persons, preborn to elderly and all stages therein believing as all right thinking persons do what Pope Benedict XVI wrote before he was elected: "Scripture, in fact, clearly excludes every form of the kind of self-determination of human existence that is presupposed in the theory and practice of euthanasia."

Not all moral issues have the same moral weight as abortion and euthanasia. For example, if a Catholic were to be at odds with the Holy Father on the application of capital punishment or on the decision to wage war, he would not for that reason be considered unworthy to present himself to receive Holy Communion.

While the Church exhorts civil authorities to seek peace, not war, and to exercise discretion and mercy in imposing punishment on criminals, it may still be permissible to take up arms to repel an aggressor or to have recourse to capital punishment. There may be a legitimate diversity of opinion even among Catholics about waging war and applying the death penalty, but not however with regard to abortion and euthanasia.

III. ADULT, NOT EMBRYONIC STEM CELL RESEARCH

(see definition 3.)

A prenatal is defined as any human being from conception to birth. Human life begins at conception and develops through several different stages until the prenatal is viable outside the womb and is born. The word "prenatal" means "before birth." A prenatal is a developing human being.

Embryonic stem cells are obtained from prenatals at a point very early in development. Obtaining these cells typically results in the destruction of the prenatal. The direct and voluntary killing of a prenatal is always a serious sin against God because prenatal life is developing human life.

Therefore:

We shall strive to teach and educate through all means particularly through the media the simple truth that human embryos are prenatal human beings and are as inviolable as the fetus, the newborn, the toddler, the child, the teen, the adult and the aged.

We shall cooperate will individual persons and groups who promote, sustain, proclaim and legislate these truths wherever possible.

We will speak out against this medical and scientific madness that embraces a frankensteinian ethos that says "if it can be done, it will be done and be damned the moral and social consequences." The end does not justify the means.

To foster and promote adult-stem cell research, to date the only successful research in the field.

IV . NATURAL CONCEPTION, NOT CLONING

Principle: Cloning relates to the dignity of human procreation. Each human person should have the right to be born of the natural sexual union of a man and a woman. Cloning would be a denial of this process and this right. The cloning process would involve what the document calls a 'radical rupture' of the ordinary bonds of parenting and family. Cloning is the production of a life in a process that is the most removed of all from the truly human process.

The second is related to the dignity that is to be accorded to each person without discrimination. That dignity demands the recognition that a person is never to be treated merely as a means to another end. A cloning program may be aimed at the production of genetically engineered human beings, or may be undertaken to replicate genetically one particular human being. Doing this means subordinating such cloned beings to the purposes of others, for utility or satisfaction or even mere curiosity. Such a process is intrinsically wrong.

( From The Pontifical Academy for Life, 1997, instituted by Pope John Paul II in 1994 specifically to examine bioethical issues. It is based in the Vatican.) (see definition 4.)

Therefore:

We shall cooperate will individual persons and groups who promote, sustain, proclaim and legislate these truths wherever possible.

We will speak out against this medical and scientific madness that embraces a frankensteinian ethos that says "if you can do it, it will be done and be damned the moral and social consequences." The end does not justify the means.

V. TRUE MARRIAGE, NOT PARODY

Principle: The St. Thomas More Society wishes to make it clear that the institution of marriage, as the union of one man and one woman, must be preserved, protected, and promoted in both private and public forums. We oppose attempts to grant the legal status of marriage to a relationship between persons of the same gender. No same-sex union can realize the unique and full potential which the marital relationship expresses. † For this reason, our opposition to "same-sex marriage" is not an instance of unjust discrimination or any form of animosity toward homosexual persons. (see definition 5.)

Therefore:

We shall cooperate will individual persons and groups who promote, sustain, proclaim and legislate these truths wherever possible.

We shall work to repeal any laws permitting "same-sex marriage" as an affront to truth, the family and all of human society.

We shall work to foster laws that support the institution of marriage and the family and oppose laws that encourage or promote divorce, so called "common law" marriage or civil "marriage" or "unions" for persons of the same gender.

VI. NATURAL FAMILY PLANNING, NOT CONTRACEPTION, IVF and all forms of ARTIFICIAL ("ASSISTED") REPRODUCTIVE TECHNOLOGY

Principle: Contraception and its mentality is the root cause of abortion. Sexual intimacy is sacred beyond all human comprehension. It is that time when God Himself touches the very core of our beings for the purpose of inexpressible union and love and the possibility of creating a new soul, a corporal and spiritual entity we call a human being. This intimacy is reserved solely for marriage because procreation is not the only purpose of this marital embrace but it is certainly the primary purpose of marriage as designed by God. Contraception puts God entirely out of the picture. Sex outside of marriage is condemned as fornication by all faiths. Adultery is the leading cause of divorce and family breakup. Contraception promotes adultery, fornication, STD's and AIDS/HIV.

ART or Assisted Reproductive Technology is intrinsically evil in all its forms. (see definition 6.)

Therefore:

(a.) It is a major goal of The St. Thomas More Society to reveal the horrific lies and misinformation of the contraception promoters. We will do so by all honorable means. The "Pill" and the IUD and other types of "birth control" abort more children than direct induced abortion. Couples who use Natural Family Planning (NFP) have a divorce rate of less than 5% as opposed to 50% in contracepting marriages. Several pages will soon be devoted to this most critical matter on this website.

NOTES

1. Definition: ABORTION

(Direct Induced) Abortion is the murder (homicide) of an innocent child. - Pope John Paul II

Abortion is the termination of a pregnancy associated with the death and expulsion of the embryo or fetus from the womb. When an abortion occurs naturally or accidentally it is called a spontaneous abortion, but if the development of the fetus or embryo is deliberately aborted it is an induced abortion. Abortion induced because the pregnancy poses a health risk to the gravida (pregnant woman) is known as therapeutic abortion (see (d.) above), while abortion induced at the request of the gravida is known as elective abortion. Spontaneous abortion is also known as miscarriage by lay people.

From the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC):

2271 Since the first century the Church has affirmed the moral evil of every procured abortion. This teaching has not changed and remains unchangeable. Direct abortion, that is to say, abortion willed either as an end or a means, is gravely contrary to the moral law:
You shall not kill the embryo by abortion and shall not cause the newborn to perish. 74

God, the Lord of life, has entrusted to men the noble mission of safeguarding life, and men must carry it out in a manner worthy of themselves. Life must be protected with the utmost care from the moment of conception: abortion and infanticide are abominable crimes. 75

2272 Formal cooperation in an abortion constitutes a grave offense. The Church attaches the canonical penalty of excommunication to this crime against human life. "A person who procures a completed abortion incurs excommunication latae sententiae," 76 "by the very commission of the offense," 77 and subject to the conditions provided by Canon Law. 78 The Church does not thereby intend to restrict the scope of mercy. Rather, she makes clear the gravity of the crime committed, the irreparable harm done to the innocent who is put to death, as well as to the parents and the whole of society.

2322 From its conception, the child has the right to life. Direct abortion, that is, abortion willed as an end or as a means, is a "criminal" practice (GS 27 § 3), gravely contrary to the moral law. The Church imposes the canonical penalty of excommunication for this crime against human life.
2274 Since it must be treated from conception as a person, the embryo must be defended in its integrity, cared for, and healed, as far as possible, like any other human being.

77 CIC, can. 1314.
78 Cf. CIC, cann. 1323-1324.

2. Definition: EUTHANASIA

Voluntary euthanasia: When the person who is killed has requested to be killed.
Non-voluntary euthanasia: When the person who is killed made no request and gave no consent.
Involuntary euthanasia: When the person who is killed made an expressed wish to the contrary.
Assisted suicide: Someone provides an individual with the information, guidance, and means to take his or her own life with the intention that they will be used for this purpose. When it is a doctor who helps another person to kill himself or herself it is called "physician assisted suicide."
Euthanasia By Action: Intentionally causing a person's death by performing an action such as by giving a lethal injection.
Euthanasia By Omission: Intentionally causing death by not providing necessary and ordinary (usual and customary) means, such as food and water.

From the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC):

2277 Whatever its motives and means, direct euthanasia consists in putting an end to the lives of handicapped, sick, or dying persons. It is morally unacceptable.

Thus an act or omission which, of itself or by intention, causes death in order to eliminate suffering constitutes a murder gravely contrary to the dignity of the human person and to the respect due to the living God, his Creator. The error of judgment into which one can fall in good faith does not change the nature of this murderous act, which must always be forbidden and excluded.

2324 Intentional euthanasia, whatever its forms or motives, is murder. It is gravely contrary to the dignity of the human person and to the respect due to the living God, his Creator.

3. Definition: EMBRYONIC STEM CELL RESEARCH

Embryonic stem cells are cultured cells obtained from the inner mass cells of an embryo. Embryonic stem cell research is still in the basic research phase.
There might be an ethically acceptable alternative for obtaining embryonic stem cells, says a bioethicist.
Research with embryonic stem cells derived from humans is controversial because, in order to start a stem cell 'line' or lineage, it requires the killing of an embryo which is a human being at an early stage following conception.

4. Definition: CLONING

Cloning is the deliberate production of genetically identical offspring. Scientists have now succeeded in cloning some animals, the most famous being Dolly the sheep. However, in the case of Dolly, hundreds of embryos had to be cloned before a reasonable number of pregnancies could be achieved, and there were many miscarriages and lambs born with abnormalities before one healthy lamb was born. Even that one apparently healthy lamb, Dolly, subsequently developed premature arthritis. If something similar was attempted in human beings the most likely results would be miscarriage, stillbirth and children born with severe disabilities. The human cost would be enormous and for no good reason. Even if it became safe, the surviving cloned babies would be deprived of a genetic mother and father and would live in the shadow of their genetic original. They would be objects of manipulation that had been produced to a pre-existent specification and would not have been received as a gift as children deserve to be. This would be invidious and unjust.

It has recently been suggested that cloned human embryos could be used as a source of stem cells which could be useful in future medical advances. This is usually termed 'therapeutic cloning', though it would not be therapeutic for the cloned embryos who would be destroyed for their cells. The process is also euphemistically called 'cell nuclear transfer': a title which disguises the fact that the aim is to produce human embryos and then make use of them. Therapeutic cloning would be far worse than full pregnancy cloning as it would set up a system in which human embryos were cloned only to be destroyed so that their cells could be 'harvested'. Medical research which involves the destruction of human embryos is 'a crime against their dignity as human beings' (The Gospel of Life, paragraph 63). It should also be noted that there are good alternative sources of stem cells which do not require cloning or the destruction of embryos. Stem cells taken directly from adults are already being used in medicine and appear to represent the most promising way forward for stem cell therapy. From Cherishing Life

5. Definition: MARRIAGE

From - N.Y.Catholic Conference of Bishops, Jan.1, 2005:

Marriage is not merely a private arrangement, but is of vital concern to all members of our society. Throughout recorded history, and in virtually every society on earth, marriage between a man and a woman has been humanity's way of assuring the procreation, education and stable rearing of children. It is inextricably linked to the complementary and procreative nature of men and women. Any legislation that would affect the critical status of marriage must be carefully evaluated to ensure that it will enhance, and not undermine, the stability and strength of marriages and thus of society as a whole.

Restrictions on marriage are not discriminatory. The states have historically regulated marriage to preserve and protect the institution. Such regulations have included restrictions against marrying close relatives, minor children or multiple partners. Some states still require couples to undergo blood tests before being granted a license to marry.

The state's interest in marriage is not to facilitate a mechanism to confer benefits on sexual partners. Rather, the state's interest is in the stability of families for the purpose of reproducing and raising well-adjusted children, which benefits all of society. The conferring of certain benefits on married couples by the state is designed precisely to advance this interest. While two people of the same sex might have a committed sexual relationship, the state does not have a legitimate interest in such a relationship any more than it has an interest in the relationship between two friends who hold each other in affection but are not sexual partners. By defending traditional marriage, the Church is recognizing the state's proper role with regard to the relationships between individuals. We urge the state to protect the integrity of the institution of marriage by passing a statewide Defense of Marriage Act to render same-sex "marriages" in other jurisdictions null and void in New York State. We further urge the state to reject so-called "civil unions," which are simply marriage by another name.

By doing so, the state will clarify that the purpose of marriage is not simply to ease inheritance rights, provide health insurance benefits or grant societal approval to a sexual relationship. Rather, the purpose is procreation and the creation of a stable environment for children.

6. Definition: NATURAL FAMILY PLANNING

The definition of natural family planning is very simple. The couple relies on nature designed by God to achieve or avoid pregnancy. It is 99% effective. A woman is fertile for only about 100 to 120 hours during a month. Let's call this time period the "window of fertility." By avoiding sexual intimacy during the window of fertility, pregnancy can be avoided. This method can also help achieve pregnancy by understanding the fertility cycle better and learning when the probability of conceiving is highest. The question that various natural family planning methods are trying to answer is "How do I determine exactly when the window of fertility starts and ends?" If the window could be determined with 100% accuracy, then natural family planning would be a nearly perfect birth control method.
Read: The Pill vs. NFP
However, the window can only be estimated (estimated though with high probability). To determine the window of fertility, these methods use such things as temperature, mucus, and cervical changes.
